Participants in The
Violence of Information symposium:
Museum Hermeticum

“Museum
Hermeticum is not an esoteric virtual place... but
claims, all the same, the power of a sort of new alchimy.
The adjective [hermeticum] comes from Hermes, the Old
Greek god of the communication. This personnal museum
gathers the result of 15 years search in the picture
field and its relation with technologies.
Museum Hermeticum is an imaginary museum.
It examines the meaning of a piece of art out of its
context, cut and distort by a modern liking for the blow
up and love for the details. The work on computer makes
only a synthesis of our modern art approach...
Museum Hermeticum is personal museum.
It is the fact of everybody to have an imaginary museum
in spite of cultural level. Each of us sets up a mind
museum by [zapping] as well in traditional culture as in
contemporary medias: publicity, posters, Cdrom pockets,
books covers, TV, etc. A museum where the names of
authors are forgotten, as well as the whole work and its
title.
The computer allowed me to materialize my museum. I made
it exactly like a child cut up from a magazine his
favorite pictures and stick them, in a selected order, on
a new magic page.
Museum Hermeticum is a [cabinet de curiosités] or
[curios room], (the ancestor of the museum) in the same
way of those, in the old days, which could found in
castles, generaly associated with a library. The purpose
of a [cabinet de curiosites] is to establish links
between objects in spite of a scientific logic or
historic knowledge.
I tried here to establish, through the computer
possibilities and in accordance with a theory of
correspondences- (Baudelaire-Etienne Souriau) the
correspondences, through the computer work, between the
different fields of art: calligrams, computer graphics,
music, etc. I make a picture in the same way others make
a perfume.
Finally, Museum Hermeticum is a place for the meeting of
elective affinities. A place where I like to invite
friends, emphasize their creativity and pay tribute to
the others for their tireless work.”
